1. Introduction

Cubase includes information as to the details of the respective MIDI set-up in mixer maps too. So you have to convert these mixer maps into 'your own' mixer maps corresponding to your particular hardware equipment.
So you must read the following guide carefully, following it step by step. Only then will you be able to customize these mixer maps successfully!

2. Installation

Step 1:
Start the program 'MME Setup' of Cubase 5. Make sure, that the MIDI playback entry, where your XG synth is connected to (called 'Your XG device' in this helpfile), is activated and at the top of the list of all available MIDI playback devices. This step is important because these mixer maps are programmed to use the first available MIDI device in Cubase.
If it is not possible for you (for any reason) to make 'Your XG device' to the prefered MIDI device you additionally have to 'reprogram' all these mixer maps
(look at: How to reprogram these mixer maps to other MIDI devices).

Step 2:
Start Cubase, create a MIDI track and select as 'type' for this track 'Mix track'.

Step 3:
Load a mixer map into this track.

Step 4:
Save this mixer map again now and select: 'Replace mixer map'.

Step 5:
Reply step 3 and 4 for each of my 20 Yamaha XG mixer maps.

Now these mixer maps are customized to your equipment and should work fine.

3. Important hint

Sometimes Cubase get's in trouble loading several mixer maps with a huge amount of data simultaneously and craches (-> 'Blue Screen' or 'System frozen').
To avoid this I recommend to reprogram these mixer maps 'step by step'. After reprograming of maximum 6 of my mixer maps you should finish Cubase, start it again and continue with the next 6 mixer maps, until all of my 20 XG mixer maps are 'reprogrammed'.

4. How to reprogram these mixer maps to other MIDI playback devices

  1. Load the mixer map, create a 'MIDI part' on this track and make a doubleclick on this part: the mix track editor will open like this.
  2. Select the 'Edit Tool' (Arrow) of the Toolbox - you can open the toolbox with a right click:
    Cubase Toolbox
  3. Mark all mixer objects by pressing 'CTRL' + 'A' simultaneously. Now all mixer objects should be marked with a little black square:
    All mixer objects marked
  4. Press 'CTRL' again, keep it pressed and double click on any mixer object.
Note: Some Cubase revisions require to press 'ALT' instead of 'CTRL'!
  5. Now a window called 'Object Definition' should open:
    Window Object Definition
  6. Now press 'Alt Gr' and keep it pressed!
  7. Select in the field 'MIDI Output / Output' entry 'Your XG device' and press 'OK'.
  8. After this a dialog box with the message 'Copy the changed Values to Selected or All Objects?' will open.
    Select 'All':
    Select All
  9. Now you don't need to press 'Alt GR' any more.
  10. Undo the selection of all mixer objects with a click in blank field below or beside the mixer map.
  11. Select the 'Play Tool' (Hand) of the Toolbox.
  12. Finally store the mixer map and overwrite any older version.
  13. Now reprogram the other 19 mixer maps in the same way.
Important advice:
This guide is for Cubase 5.0 R4 or higher (up to 5.1).
Previous releases of Cubase 5® may have different short cuts on the keyboard (i.e. 'Release 1').
You can find precise advice inside the Cubase 5 manual 'MIDI Mixer.pdf'.
